Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speaking event organizer. She founded Feminist Frequency which provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for over a decade. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit site for education that investigates the representation of women in pop stories of culture - was created and directed by Sarkeesian. In addition, she works to bring awareness to the targeted and sexist attack on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is determined to break down stereotypes that are associated with popular culture. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very young time. In 2009, when she was still studying at university she started her Feminist Frequency web site. It was a girl with a dream to develop a series of web videos that would examine how gender is represented in games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her determination as a feminist critic of media. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her numerous prominent contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women in popular media stories.
